Trivia
- On one wall of Kent Brockman's office is a picture showing him on the Berlin Wall. One of the writings on the wall is German for "Kent was here".
- The last time Kent swears on the air and eventually gets fired occurred in Krusty Gets Kancelled.
- The last episode with a Tracey Ullman short is inserted in was The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular.
- The last time a character shouts out a swear word in front of Ned Flanders which is unknown to the audience was in Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part One), and is covered in the same manner by multiple loud noises.
- There is a Wall of Visitors in the Simpsons House which features photos of everyone who stayed with them throughout the series. These people include: Apu (Homer and Apu and "The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons": Apu lost his job and lied to his mother about being married), Groundskeeper Willie (My Fair Laddy When Bart accidentally destroyed his shack, and had to stay at The Simpsons' home), Nelson Muntz ("Sleeping with the Enemy": Nelson had to live somewhere because his mother left to become an actress), Otto Mann ("The Otto Show": Otto lost his job), Kang or Kodos (Various Treehouse of Horror episodes), Gil Gunderson ("Kill Gil: Vols. 1 & 2": Gil lost his job and had nowhere to live), Krusty ("Krusty Gets Kancelled" and "The Last Temptation of Krust": Krusty's show got cancelled and was made fun of for not being a good comedian), Stampy ("Bart Gets an Elephant": Bart's new pet), Artie Ziff ("The Ziff Who Came to Dinner": Artie lost his company) and Sideshow Bob ("The Great Louse Detective": Sideshow Bob helped Homer solve the case of his murderer).
- Homer mentions Apu singing Who Needs the Kwik-E-Mart? in the episode "Homer and Apu".
- This is the second time The Krusty the Clown Show and its host ended up being negatively affected due to a costly fine from the US Government being imposed, as the show had earlier had most of its content stripped by the IRS in response to Krusty's tax evasion. In this particular case, however, the fine was not Krusty's fault, as he and his show had the misfortune of airing on Channel 6 which at that point had been affected by a ten million dollar fine by the FCC due to Kent Brockman's swear.
Cultural references
- The scene where Kent Brockman says to stand up to Fox while smoking is in reference to Edward R. Murrow and the film "Good Night, and Good Luck".[1]
- The title of the video shown in the dentist's office, "Menace Tooth Society" (which was implied to have been shown without Ludacris' permission), is a spoof of "Menace II Society". Lisa's comment that the cartoon sends mixed messages parallels critiques of the spoofed movie.
- The title of this episode is a play on the Rolling Stones song, You Can't Always Get What You Want. Originally, the episode was supposed to be titled, The Kent State Massacre, but after the Virginia Tech shootings made the news, the episode's title was changed.
- When ordering his ice cream cone, Homer mentions several toppings, all of which are real candies with their names slightly but noticeably changed, such as Herschel's Smooches and Mrs. Badbar. Even though real candies have been mentioned several times in the show before.
- As Marge runs hurriedly home to get Bart and Lisa, the main yodeling music of the Coen Brother's film "Raising Arizona" is heard.
- Some of the shows Ned considers naughty are: Smallville (because Superdog licks himself), 60 Minutes (Morleen Sayfer has questionable pantsfold and uses the "L" word), The L Word (because of the L word), and Channel 6 News (For Kent Brockman's swear word)
- The only shows Ned considers nice are 700 Club and Test Pattern (Non-Indian).
