  • The couch gag is a reference to the 2013 science fiction thriller film, Gravity.
    • The music played during the couch gag is a big variation of Spiegel Im Spiegel by Arvo Part.
    • The music played during Homer's Gliding scene is Concerto for Lute and Orchestra in D-Major by Antonio Vivaldi.
  • The episode title is reference to "YOLO" which is an acronym for "you only live once". The term itself it mentioned in the episode for several times.
  • The song "You Only Live Twice" by Nancy Sinatra appears in the episode.
  • The fighting scene between Homer and Eduardo Barcelona is a parody to the fight of Captain Kirk and the Gorn from the Star Trek episode "Arena" which is considered as the worst fight scene ever.
  • Homer's chidlhood hero is June Foray who voiced Rocky the Flying Squirrel from the TV cartoon series Rocky and His Friends and The Bullwinkle Show.

  • One of Homer's childhood dreams was to ride on the back of a fire truck. However, he has already done it before he meets Eduardo, as he was a volunteer firefighter in the episode "Crook and Ladder".
  • The scene where Homer falls down the tallest building in Springfield is similar to the moment where Homer falls down Springfield Gorge after unsuccessfully attempts to jump it in "Bart the Daredevil".
  • For those who have good eyes, if you look closely at the test papers Lisa finds in Bart's backpack, one of the papers belongs to a student named Burt Symmson. There was an octopus on his paper, giving a hint that he might be a kindergartener, 1st, or 2nd grader.


  • Lisa only thought that Bart was cheating just because he had 100% on his tests, which by itself does not prove that Bart was not following the system of students trusting each other not to cheat. Lisa just wanted herself to be in the right when she forced Bart to turn himself in and wouldn't admit that she was wrong to think that he was cheating just based on him getting 100% on everything. Besides, if Bart really was cheating, it's very likely that somebody else would have already turned him in.
  • The detention quilt says "detention of '08", but this episode aired in 2013.
  • Cookie Kwan is shown at the PTA meeting, even though her only child is a baby.
  • Lisa ripped part of her hair off during one of the conversations with Bart, but some scenes later, her hair is intact.
