Facelift for Credit pages

Over the weekend, I created three templates to help our Credit pages look more like the credits in the episodes. They are Template:Cr1, Template:Cr2 and Template:Cap.

The first two are for displaying a line of text that's usually centered and for displaying info in two columns. Both include switches so you can select left-aligned, centered or right-aligned.

The Cap template has two functions: taking lowercase text like you're reading right now and displaying it in , and for making . It works with links, so we can put a link to the page for Sam Simon without having to create a redirect that says SAM SIMON.

I've converted the Credits page for Lost Verizon so you can see what it looks like. Some of them, like the Executive Producers list, I combi…

Security issues this weekend

This is a quick update to address something that happened over the weekend that we need to be aware of.

What happened is that some people figured out how to insert some Javascript code into wiki pages and it caused problems on several wikis. Wikia has temporarily shut off editing access to a few areas that admins are able to get to while they work on security updates. Until they get that done, when we've got an announcement, we can't use the normal pop-up message system. We'll have to do something like I'm doing right now, which is put it in a blog and then stick a notice about the blog on the main page or elsewhere.

Another part of what happened is that some accounts got broken into. When those accounts were admin and/or bureaucrat account…

The end of an age and relatives

Several weeks ago, the admins began discussing what to do about an issue that keeps cropping up, which is the ages of the characters are being changed frequently. As discussed in the FAQ, most of the characters don't have an age. That's because it wasn't important in the story to give them an age.

But, many people that come here try to invent ages for characters or they change the age that is there. Pretty much none of them ever say why they're changing the age via the Edit Summary line in the edit window. Most are probably doing it because they think, "The character's alive, they were born, so obviously they must have an age. I'll just put one in." That's a type of fan fiction, and we're not allowing fan fiction here because there are othe…

Getting ready for Rotten Tomatoes

About two weeks ago, Wikia announced a partnership with Rotten Tomatoes for their TV Zone section. RT collects and analyzies reviews of movies, and recently expanded that to include TV shows. Since The Simpsons is a scripted animated show, it is amongst the series included in RT's TV Zone.

The partnership means that the episode description on the Rotten Tomatoes page will be retrieved directly from this wiki. You can see an example of this for the pilot episode on RT's page for Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire.

As you can see, only the text and pictures in the Plot section are included. There's certain keywords that RT scans for and they only use the last section on the page that matches they keyword. On this page, both "Synopsis" and "Plot" …

Welcome back, new editors!

Over the past couple of days, you may have noticed there are entries in the Recent Wiki Activity list that says "edited by unregistered contributor". Or if you're looking at the Recent Changes, you'll see some IP addresses listed amongst the edits made by our registered members.

This is because the requirement to have a registered account in order to edit here has been lifted.

I'm not sure when it was put in place and I don't remember seeing anything discussing it. Usually a wiki will do this because they believe it will cut back on spam and vandalism. It's a good idea in theory because a lot of times it looks like it's only anonymous users causing problems.

My own experience has been that people who want to cause problems will not let needin…
