Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish |
|
Goofs[]
- When Lisa is talking to Mr. Burns, her teeth turn blue on the left, and red on the right.
- When Homer is eating toast in his mouth, he is beardless, but when it zooms out, he does have a beard.
- Homer arrives at work at 3:00 PM (fashionably late?), but when he falls asleep and then wakes up, he realizes it is 9:30 PM, to which he phones Marge and claims "those 12-hour days are killing me!" Homer says at the beginning of the episode that someone punches in for him.
- When Mr. Burns offers to speak with the government inspector privately, Burns' ear disappears for a few frames.
- Burns drinks from 5:05 PM until 8:30 PM but passes Homer at 9:30 PM, meaning he stumbled drunkenly around the plant for a solid hour. Neither Homer nor Mr. Burns notice (or respectively choose to ignore) each other's shortcomings, in this case Homer's sleeping on the job and Burns's drinking on the job, as Burns accuses Homer of working late, which Homer does not say anything else and accepts the compliment "You and I are a dying breed." The chance meeting has Burns believe Homer is a hard-working employee who can be trusted, hence the unraveling of the episode.
- When Burns starts drinking, the glass disappears for a frame.
- At the end of this episode, Burns's campaign for governor presumably ends in his defeat, yet the issue of the government threatening to shut down the power plant due to its numerous safety violations remains unresolved and actually becomes a running gag in future episodes.
Trivia[]
- Ironically, the episode's idea of running for political office to boost a power plant's image would be repeated in the 1992 film Batman Returns. The film, which featured Herb Powell voice and James L. Brooks Taxi star Danny DeVito as The Penguin, was also released in theater months before Batman the Animated Series aired on Fox. The film's power plant owning, toxic waste producing villain Max Shreck also bore a similar persona to Mr. Burns when it came to things like pleasure in dominance and finding ways to avoid scrutiny of his power plants. Like the power Mr. Burns possesses over Springfield via the Springfield Nuclear Plant, Shreck, who himself was already a local power plant kingpin like Mr. Burns, even tried to produce a new, "in name only" power plant which would've secretly acted as a capacitor and assured him a local monopoly by sucking and stockpiling power, and like Mr. Burns making the decision to run for Governor in order to lobby for state laws preventing any more threats to the survival of the Springfield Nuclear Plant, recruited The Penguin to run for mayor in order to dodge scrutiny of this local monopolizing power plant which may have drawn significant inspiration from the Springfield Nuclear Plant and the local dominance Mr. Burns carries with it. The end credit theme music to Batman Returns would also somehow be used in the opening for the Fox Broadcasting Corporation's first Batman show Batman: The Animated Series as well.
- 98% of Springfield voters see Mr. Burns as despicable or worse.
- This is the first episode to be rated TV-14.
- Mr. Burns's argument that the fish is a product of natural selection is validated by himself spitting the fish out. Tasty fish are more likely to be eaten by predators than bitter-tasting fish. However, by claiming during the campaign that the three-eyed fish would have "a taste that can't be beat", he caused his own political downfall.
- What the nuclear safety inspectors discover at the plant:
- Their Geiger counters show high traces of nuclear radiation before they even enter the plant's entrance gate.
- Gum is used to seal a crack in the cooling vent.
- A plutonium rod is used as a paperweight.
- The pipes leak radioactive waste that is acidic enough to burn a hole through the clipboard.
- The monitoring station is unmanned (due to Homer sleeping on the job).
- Part of the plant is flooded with nuclear waste.
- Mr. Burns attempted to bribe the chief inspector.
- First appearances of Dave Shutton and Mary Bailey.
- The trademark "burp" used primarily by Barney and occasionally by Homer makes its debut when Mr. Burns is viewing Homer on the surveillance monitors.
- It's conceivable that Marge talked to Mary Bailey to prevent Burns from firing Homer, aka getting revenge on him for ruining his campaign.
Continuity[]
- At the retirement home, after Burns's election commercial, the Duff Beer commercial from "Homer's Odyssey" can be heard.
- Bart's scrapbook contains a clipping headlined "Vandal Decapitates Town Statue... Who is El Barto?", referencing his own exploits in "The Telltale Head".
- The chalkboard gag implies Bart photocopied his buttocks, which he later did in "Special Edna".
References[]
- The title is a reference to the iconic Herbert Hoover campaign slogan.
- Citizen Kane: the entire plot.
- Hamlet: Burns refers to 'slings and arrows.'
- Brother Can You Spare a Dime?: Burns sings it.
- Burns's tank ride is based on Michael Dukakis doing the same in his 1988 presidential campaign.
Citizen Kane References[]
- Bart asking Homer "Is your boss Governor yet?" references the little boy from the film asking "Is Pop Governor yet"?
- Burns gives a speech standing in front of a gigantic poster of himself, a la Orson Welles in the movie giving a speech in front of a larger-than-life poster of his face.
- Sideshow Bob would do the same thing when he runs for Mayor in Sideshow Bob Roberts.
- Burns yelling "You cannot do this to me! I am Charles Montgomery Burns!" is a reference to the infamous line in the film "You can't do this to me! I am Charles Foster Kane!"
- Burns's trashing of the Simpsons' living room mirrors the climactic scene where Kane violently destroys his second wife Susan's bedroom after she leaves him.
