Trivia[]

  • The sign Edna holds up after Superintendent Chalmers tells Seymour Skinner about the drivers' support reads "HONK! IF YOU LOVE COOKIES".
  • The books that Springfield Elementary has that were banned from other schools are:
    • TEK WAR
    • Theory of Evolution
    • Sexus
    • 40 Years of Playboy
    • Steal This Book
    • Hop on Pop
    • The Satanic Verses
  • Before Marge arrives to substitute-teach Bart's class, the subs he drives out are:
  • This was the last episode to use the 20th Television logo before using the 20th Century Fox Television logo in the next episode.

Cultural References[]

  • The way Uter gets left behind is mostly like what happened at the end of the 1965 World War II film Von Ryan's Express.
  • The "Diz-Nee Historical Park" (the new ownership of the Fort Springfield Civil War site) is a reference to Disney's failed attempt to build a historical theme park to be known as Disney's America. The park was to be located close to Manassas Battlefield, and was withdrawn in 1994 due to opposition.
  • According to the DVD commentary, Milhouse's tutor is actually a caricature of Tony Randall.
  • The scene in the bank is a reference to the movie Itā€™s a Wonderful Life.
  • During the teachers strike, one of the substitute teachers whom Bart drives out is Gabe Kaplan, who played high school teacher and title character Gabe Kotter on Welcome Back, Kotter.

Goofs[]

  • Wrongsign

Milhouse's tutor lists the wrong years while part of Milhouse's pants are colored yellow

Some of the books banned from other schools change color between close-up and faraway shots.
  • Principal Skinner says that the children have no future, apparently forgetting that Martin Prince and Lisa Simpson are the smartest kids in the school while everyone else is either average to awful. Though "being smart" doesn't guarantee that Martin or Lisa will have a good future, as they can still trip up and ruin their lives, while the average to awful students, like Bart, can make something of themselves, as seen when Bart has a demolition job in "Lisa's Wedding" and become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in "Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie".
  • While with a tutor, the blackboard in Milhouse's home reads Colonial Period (1776ā€“1836) when in reality it ended a year before in 1775 after the beginning in 1607. Also, while Milhouse is sitting down, the right side of the back of Milhouse's pants is colored yellow instead of red, making Milhouse look like he's naked.
  • In the scene where Bart gets beaten up by the bullies, Dolph is speaking with Jimbo's voice while Kearney is speaking with Dolph's.
  • During Skinner's speech to the students in the school cafeteria, two Allison Taylors are seen sitting on different sides of the canteen.
  • Edna mentions that Skinner's budget has cut salaries. However, teacher salaries are determined by the district, not by individual schools.
