The Simpsons' eighth season first aired on October 27, 1996 with its first episode, "Treehouse of Horror VII" and ended May 18, 1997 with its final episode, "The Secret War of Lisa Simpson". Season 8 featured many episodes which are given below. This includes four episodes that are holdovers from the previous season.

Season 8 is one of only two seasons to date with no Christmas break, "Hurricane Neddy" aired on December 29, 1996 (during the Christmas period), meaning that the season continued airing over Christmas. Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein were the showrunners of the season.

The Simpsons Complete Season Eight boxset was released: Like the last two, there were two editions, one with the normal box, and this time, a Maggie shaped clamshell boxset.

The Thing and I: Bart, Lisa and Maggie hears strange noises in the attic, with Homer and Marge going up there for some reason. Soon, they discover a maniac kid named Hugo, who is soon to be revealed the conjoined twin brother of Bart, and he soon goes loose.

The Genesis Tub: During a science experiment if soda will dissolve a rot tooth, an electricity accident converts into her experiment, creating a race of miniature beings, evolving into a rapid rate, and building their own economy. Unfortunately, during Lisa's study on the race, Bart destroys some of the ecosystem and the race sets up an attack on him.

Citizen Kang: Homer is abducted by aliens Kang and Kodos and the latter decides to also abduct both Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, and poses as them in order to run against each other in the upcoming election.

Homer receives a better job offer by Globax Corporation and he decides to move the family to the town of Cypress Creek. Homer's new boss, Hank Scorpio, is soon to be revealed to be a villainous man for world domination as Homer is intensely oblivious of his employer's plans.

Bart buys an extravagant belt on a trip to the mall, but the school bullies beats him up and steal it. When Homer goes to confront the parents of the boys in Moe's Tavern, he promptly receives a beating on his own. During the beating, Homer seems to be completely unfazed by the incident, causing Moe into seeing this and influences Homer into proposing his abilities in boxing. This leads to a match between Homer and a powerful boxing champion.

Mr. Burns discovers that he has a son, a 57-year old man named Larry. But Burns sees Larry as lazy and an insult towards him, causing Mr. Burns wanting to do nothing with his son. Homer, in order to make Mr. Burns change his mind, decides to kidnap Larry.

Bart ends up damaging an abandoned house and soon, he discovers that the house is a Burlesque house and decides to receive an enthusiasm of the job at the house. Marge, upon learning this, overhears this and tries to convince the owner of the Burlesque house, Belle, into shutting down the house and also to convince Bart into being unemployed.

Milhouse's parents, Kirk and Luann Van Houten's heated marriage, ends when Luann demands a divorce and soon, Kirk becomes upset about this after the divorce and with the Simpsons' help, he makes an attempt to remarry her.

After someone steals the Honda "H" off Superintendent Chalmers' car, Principal Skinner tries to find the culprit. Nelson is found guilty and Lisa soon falls for his rebellious ways, causing her to develop a crush on him. Meanwhile, Homer obtains a telemarketing machine, which ends up driving the town mad.

A hurricane occurs and goes straight through Springfield. But, however, the houses and town, including the Simpsons' house are not damaged by the hurricane; the Flanders' house is the only house in town to be destroyed by the hurricane. As a result, Ned officially becomes upset after his friends and neighbors, including Homer crudely rebuild their house and is checked into a psychiatric ward to discover the source of his sudden uncontrollable rage ever since his childhood.

After Homer downs several Guatemalan insanity peppers at an annual chili cook-off, he goes off into a bizarre universe where anything is both applied and not applied, where he travels through a mysterious journey, complete with a talking coyote spirit guide, to discover his soul mate.

After being intoxicated and deciding to walk home, Homer ends up going through the wrong path and he sees a glowing thin-boned alien, causing to convince everyone about this, but no one even believes him, not even FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who has come to investigate many spreading crimes throughout Springfield.

After the plant fails miserably at a routine fire drill, Mr. Burns organizes a retreat to promote teamwork. Homer misunderstands and brings his family, having to leave them to roam the park looking for things to do. The employees are paired up and race for a cabin at the top of the mountain, with that the last pair to reach for the cabin will be eventually fired.

Due to being stress, Marge eventually loses her hair and the Simpsons hires a nanny.

The ratings of The Itchy & Scratchy show begins to go low, so the producers decides to add and introduce a new character, a dog named Poochie and Homer auditions for the voice of the new character, eventually winning. Unfortunately, Poochie's character prevented violence in the show, causing the show to receive low ratings and overwhelmingly negative reviews.

A shop owner named John befriends Homer and the rest of the Simpson family. However, Homer discovers that John is a homosexual and becomes worried that Bart will soon emulate him.

Frank Grimes, the new employee at the power plant, is displeased with Homer's incompetence and work ethic, and becomes further annoyed with this. He eventually declares himself an enemy of Homer.

Troy McClure presents three Simpsons spin-off spoofs: In "Chief Wiggum, P.I.", Chief Wiggum becomes a detective and moves to New Orleans with Principal Skinner as his assistant. Next, Grampa Simpson's soul is trapped inside Moe's Love tester machine in "The Love-Matic Grampa". Finally, the Simpson family host a '70ish variety show in "The Simpson Family Smile-Time Variety Hour".
