Cultural References[]

  • The episode title is a pun on Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet.
  • The battle sequence with Bart, Lisa and the box salesmen uses The Fields of the Pelennor, a portion of the score from the Lord of the Rings, and the scene itself is a parody of the Battle of the Hornburg from The Two Towers and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields from The Return of the King. One of the A.S.S. delivery men even flies a Fell beast like the Nazgûl.
  • When the A.S.S. legions show up at the Simpsons, Bart asks Lisa "Who knew a bunch of guys in brown shirts could cause so much trouble?" This is a reference to the Brown Shirts of the Sturmabteilung (SA) who were the most violent members of the German National Socialist (Nazi) Party before they took over Germany in 1933.
  • Lisa calls the box fort "Boxingham Palace," a reference to Buckingham Palace.
  • When Abe gets the kitchen appliances confused, he mistakes the microwave for a TV, and puts in a VHS of Sands of Iwo Jima. Abe sets it to run for two hours, but the movie is only 100 minutes long. This was just done as it is easier for a joke.
  • The montage song is "is she really going out with him?" by Joe Jackson.
  • Abe reveals that he once worked at Pan Am Airlines.
  • Selma alludes to The Beatles' song "All You Need is Love".

Trivia[]

  • When Homer and Patty prepare their mental images so they can kiss each other without barfing, Homer imagines Patty as Marge, Marge as a cowgirl, Marge as a cheerleader, Marge as a devil and Marge as a hot dog chef. Patty imagines Homer as Edna Krabappel, which means that Patty has a crush on Edna.
  • In spite of his financial state, it’s quite surprising that Homer agreed to have Abe move in with the family given the fact he was the one who sent Abe to the Retirement Home in the first place and has also tried to avoid contact with him on several occasions since.
  • When Abe says he doesn't even have two kidneys to rub together it's true since Homer "donated" one of his kidneys to him after causing Grampas kidneys to explode by not stopping to let him go to the bathroom during "Homer Simpson in: "Kidney Trouble"".
  • This is the second episode where a Simpson falls down the steps to the basement because they couldn't see where they were going. The first was "Bart the Mother".
  • With their names appearing on a list of Selma's former husbands, this is one of a few episodes after season 10 where Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz are referenced, as both were retired following Phil Hartman's death in that season.
  • This is the second time that Abe has eyes on a relative of Marge. The first time was when he was courting Marge's mother. Although it wasn't mentioned, it's assumed that Homer wasn't happy with the pairing of Abe and Selma because that would mean he would be Marge's nephew (and he doesn't like the idea of being Selma's son, as he hates her).
  • Homer tells Lisa that birds swelling up after eating rice is an urban legend. In typical Homer fashion, he is quickly shown otherwise, but in real life, he is correct: raw rice is not harmful to birds, and it certainly does not cause them to explode. Interestingly, this is the second time Lisa claims that birds swell up after eating rice and asked people not to throw it at a wedding. The first was "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Marge".
