The Planet of the Couches couch gag is a a virtual reality couch gag for the show's 600th episode. Fans were be able to view it with Google Cardboard.[1]


In a spoof of Planet of the Apes, the Simpsons are being chased by couches through a field, until they are caught and imprisoned. The Simpsons' couch breaks them out, and leads the family to a buried Lard Lad statue. Homer then grabs a rock and slams it on the couch, making it unconscious. The Simpson family sits on the couch.

  • This couch gag was made by a collaboration between The Simpsons and Google when Google asked the producers to make a virtual experience with a couch gag. The producers decided to use this couch gag that was already finished, but was adapted to VR.
  • Ironically, this couch gag was aired two weeks after the airing of an episode focused around virtual reality.
  • The couch gag is a parody of the 1968 film Planet of the Apes.
  • This couch gag is a sequel to the couch gag from Marge's Son Poisoning and Marge and Homer Turn a Couple Play, where the couches come to life, and attack the people of Springfield.
