Cartwright discovered her talent for voice characterizations in the 4th grade. She starred in such films as "Heaven Help Us" and "Flesh and Blood" and did the voice of Gusty in "My Little Pony The Movie" Melissa Screetch in Toonsylvania, and did the voice of Chuckie Finster on "Rugrats".

She actually intended to audition for the role of Lisa Simpson but when she saw a picture of Bart Simpson and under it is said that he is a class clown, underachiever, and a daredevil, she knew that she would rather do Bart, which worked perfectly because Yeardley Smith was about to do the voice of Bart and ended up doing Lisa because she had more of a girly voice. Ms. Cartwright does the voices of Bart Simpson, Nelson Muntz, Todd Flanders, Ralph Wiggum, Kearney Zzyzwicz, Database and more. In the 1998 remake of Godzilla, she and fellow Simpsons voice cast members Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer appeared.

In 2000, she published an autobiography, My Life as a 10-Year-Old Boy.

Personal life[]

She met Warren Murphy on her birthday, in 1988, and married him two months later. They had two children together, Lucy and Jack, before divorcing in 2002.

She is a member of the Church of Scientology.

In 2006, Cartwright was in the Assembly Rooms venue at the Edinburgh Festival, when a man collapsed. Cartwright came to his aide, telling him to "come away from the light". She reportedly spoke to him in her Bart Simpson voice, so that it was a voice the man might find comfortably recognizable. Australian comedian Adam Hills was also present, and the incident, which he described as "surreal", became the basis of one of his stand-up routines.[citation needed]

Appearances outside of The Simpsons[]

In addition to The Simpsons, Cartwright had voiced Chuckie Finster from Rugrats, starting in 2002 after Christine Cavanaugh, who voiced him previously, retired from acting. She began her voice acting debut as Gloria Glad on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, Richie Rich. Cartwright has also voiced numerous other animated characters, including Daffney Gillfin in Snorks, Rufus in Kim Possible, Mindy in Animaniacs, Pistol in Goof Troop, FX in Fantastic Max, and Todd Daring in The Replacements.

Since 1999, she has been the voice of Dash, the main host of the PBS Kids television channel.
