• The episode title is a pun on Lost Horizon and a reference to Verizon Communications.
• Inga-Bar Beerman is a reference of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman.
• Crocodile Dunkee's is a parody of Crocodile Dundee.
• Principal Skinner crosses the freeway in a similar fashion to the game Frogger.
• The Allied Peas mascot is a parody of the Jolly Green Giant.
• Bart, Nelson and Milhouse eat grilled Twizzlers.
• Denis Leary is seen wearing a Boston Red Sox baseball cap. In real life, Leary is a big Red Sox fan.

• When Milhouse says he has to head home, the treehouse's bark is colored purple. It was nighttime, the colour was just shadow.

• Dr. Nick reappears in this episode, even though he appeared to have died in The Simpsons Movie.
• This marks the second time Bart has pulled a prank on Australia since Bart vs. Australia, as well as making a string of calls to different countries. Maybe he's trying to get Denis Leary booted.
• When the Aztecs flee from the conquistadors, they sound like Curly Howard.
• This is the second time Homer loses track of Maggie, and the third time a family member lost track of her. The other times were in Homer Alone and The Itchy & Scratchy Movie (the latter episode being done by Bart Simpson).
• This is the second episode Bart uses a communication device for a series of pranks until fate catches up with him. The first being Radio Bart.
