- The title of the episode is a reference to "Let's Go Fly a Kite", a song in Walt Disney's 1964 film Mary Poppins. Another song was spoofed in the title of Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala-D'oh!-cious which primarily spoofs Mary Poppins.
- Homer dressing up like Krusty to ruin a birthday party is based on the original design where Homer was secretly Krusty the Clown.
- The birthday executive is based on Ned Beatty's character from the 1976 film Network, specifically, during his "primal forces of nature" speech.
