The Simpsons features a variety of LGBTQ+ characters. Although some implications are played off as jokes, other identities are portrayed consistently. Whether directly stated or implied, this article lists all characters in the Simpsons that have been implied or labeled as part of the LGBTQ+ community. Throughout the show, 208+ characters have been confirmed or hinted to be LGBTQ+.
Lesbians are women and/or individuals with feminine aligned/non-masculine genders who experience attraction to other women and/or feminine aligned individuals.
Homosexual/gay people, are men and/or Individuals with masculine aligned/non-feminine genders who experience attraction to men and/or Individuals with masculine aligned/non-feminine genders.
Bisexual people are attracted to multiple genders, but not necessarily all genders.
Transgender people are people who don't identify as the same gender they were assigned at birth, i.e., trans men and women, and non-binary people.
So far, no characters have been described as being on the asexual or aromantic spectrums.
Kang and Kodos are both gender ambiguous. While Kang is usually shown as male (although he may be intersex), Kodos’s gender is uncertain: Kodos has a male voice and is called male in "E.T., Go Home", yet is also called “sister” and wears female clothing in Tapped Out. However, Kamala is explicitly shown as female. It could also be possible that Kodos was referred to as "sister" for comic purposes.

- Patty Bouvier - Almost married Veronica.[1] However, Veronica was actually a man named Leslie, so the wedding was called off. However, Patty has been shown with men, i.e., Seymour Skinner, although this was before she was established as homosexual. In "Treehouse of Horror III", she says, “there goes the last lingering thread of my heterosexuality” after seeing Homer naked, but this is a non-canon episode and could simply be given the line for comic effect. She has been noted to be attracted to Edna Krabappel, as she imagines her when she has to kiss Homer to break up Selma and Abe. She also dated a woman named Evelyn in "Livin La Pura Vida".
- Evelyn - She dated Patty in "Livin La Pura Vida". She ended up breaking up with Patty after she became friends with Homer but reunited with her at the end of the episode.
- Paula - Hinted as being attracted to Marge and since most of her room contains stereotypical lesbian things. Towards the ends of the episode, she reveals she has a wife.[2]
- Paula's wife - Paula reveals that she was a wife, meaning that this woman is either a lesbian or attracted to women in some capacity.
- Megan Matheson - Reveals having a wife.[3]

- Miss Viola - Has a wife whom Abe mistook for a husband.

- Suze Orman - She is a financial educator and a lesbian. She was one of the educators and teachers that Homer Simpson met at Bourbon Verlander's private estate.
- Philip Hefflin's ex-wife - She is the ex-wife of Philip Hefflin. After he was outed as being gay and they divorced, she ran next door and made out with her girlfriend.
- Philip Hefflin's ex-wife's girlfriend - She is the girlfriend of the ex-wife of Philip Hefflin. After her girlfriend and Philip divorced after he was outed as gay, her girlfriend ran to her house and made out with her.
- Ellen DeGeneres - She is a lesbian comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer.
- Clea DuVall - She is a lesbian actress, writer, producer, and director. Paula has a signed picture of her in her house.
- Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir - She is a lesbian woman who is the Prime Minister of Iceland.
- Luigi Risotto's mother - Was in the closet for many years and hated herself because she liked women. She eventually came out to Luigi, who supported her.
- Rachel Maddow - She is a lesbian television news program host and liberal political commentator and has been dating Susan Mikula since 1999.
- Bryn Mawr - She is a fictional representation of Bryn Mawr in Lisa's dream, she ended up kissing Smith.
- Smith - She is a fictional representation of Smith College in Lisa's dream, Bryn Mawr ends up kissing her.
- Billie Jean King - She is mentioned by Lisa when listing people who she admires that are gay.
- Tig Notaro - She stand-up comedian, writer, radio contributor, and actress. Paula owns a copy of Everyone Loves Tig, starring Tig Notaro.
Hinted to be lesbian
- Martha - Hinted to be attracted to the assistant librarian.[4]
- Librarian - Hinted to be attracted to Martha.[4] Though it isn’t confirmed.
- Patty Bouvier's ex-girlfriend - Seen making out with Patty Bouvier during a flashback montage of Patty coming out to her sister, Marge Simpson, in "There's Something About Marrying".
- Lisa's ex-girlfriends - These 3 women are the ex-girlfriends of Lisa Simpson seen in a future episode, the last two seemingly being in a polyamorous relationship with Lisa.
- Vicky and Katja - Seen making videos together in a sexual manor, implying that they are both lesbians or atleast attracted to each other, or they could have just been making the videos for money while being straight.
- Valerie - Lisa's college roommate in "Mr. Lisa's Opus", Valerie holds her hands and winks suggestively, leading to Lisa thinking "oh, maybe more than a friend."
- DMV Manager - She is the woman who managed Patty and Selma Bouvier at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Openly gay
- Comic Book Gay - Comic Book Guy's gay cousin. He likes "certain kinds" of comic books.[5]
- John - A nostalgia store owner who befriends the Simpson family.[6] He is voiced by John Waters who is openly gay in real life.
- Roscoe - Manager of the Ajax Steel Mill. He and his workers are all gay, and at breaks, they turn the mill into a gay nightclub.[6]
- Steel Mill Workers - Gay workers who work for Roscoe.[6]
- Steel Mover - He is a gay man who works at the Ajax Steel Mill. Dressed in shorts and no shirt, he pushes a bucket of molten steel by Homer Simpson saying "Hot stuff coming through!"
- Grady and Julio Franco - A gay couple that Homer roomed with;[7] they later broke up.[1] Grady is voiced by comedian and actor Scott Thompson who is openly gay in real life. Hank Azaria (voice of Julio) previously used the same voice for another gay character named Agador Spartacus in the 1996 comedy film titled The Birdcage. This reference is further grounded in the episode's aptly parodied title, "The Burns Cage". Julio has been voiced by openly gay actor Tony Rodriguez since 2021.
- Thad - Marries Julio (with Homer as the officiant) subsequent to Julio's and Grady's breakup.[1]
- Grizzly Shawn - Patron of Moe's Tavern during its time as "Mo's," a gay bar.[8] He becomes interested in Moe and expresses these feelings to him. He later marries Barry.
- Barry - The husband of Grizzly Shawn.
- Dewey Largo - This was first hinted in "See Homer Run" when he claimed that he and Waylon Smithers were carpooling. In "Flaming Moe", he announces to his music class that he is running away with the love of his life, Dewey, an older man. The two met at Moe's during its time as a gay bar named Mo's. In "The Road to Cincinnati", Dewey and Dewey are seen having breakfast together in the background, at the Tuckernuck Inn (a bed-and-breakfast Skinner and Chalmers visit en route to Cincinnati). He also has a lisp and speaks in inflections, which is sometimes associated with gay-coded characters.
- Waylon Smithers, Jr. - There are numerous references to Smithers' orientation (or at least his fixation on Mr. Burns) and his efforts to keep it a secret. However, a blatant example occurs when Smithers boots up his home computer and animation of Mr. Burns appears, saying (in obviously cobbled-together sound clips), "Hello, Smithers. You're quite good at turning me on." Smithers then says to Lisa (who was standing behind him), "Um, you should probably just ignore that."[9] Smithers was first shown to be openly gay in Flaming Moe when he helps reopen Moe's tavern as a gay bar. Smithers comes out in The Burns Cage. He has been considered as gay rather than ‘Burns-sexual’, notably when 2 female strippers danced against him and he began cowering in fear.
- Dewey - An ex-boyfriend of Dewey Largo.
- Elton John - He is openly gay in real life and has been married to Canadian filmmaker David Furnish since 2005.
- Philip Hefflin - A photographer who was interested in Abe Simpson II and claims that women disgust him.
- Svenjamin "Sven" Golly - Upon meeting Marge, he says, "Ugh, where were you when I was straight?".
- Gay Colonel - Colonel who dates with Hans Moleman.
- Unnamed smoking man - Moe tried to steal his watches, but when the man noticed him, Moe said that he had been just coming on to him. The man took Moe's hand and said that they could go back to his place.[10]
- Stuart - A close friend to Waylon Smithers.
- Llewellyn Sinclair - Is seen in the crowd of gay men.[5]
- LGBT Crowd
- Michael De Graaf - He dated Waylon Smithers in "Portrait of a Lackey on Fire".
- Anderson Cooper - He is an American journalist, who appears in the episode "The Kid is All Right", during the future. In the episode he will be the moderator of the presidential debate between Lisa and Isabel.
- Angelo - He is an employee at Luigi's and a sub-contractor for J&J Construction. After Homer told the contractor to just kiss Marge, the contractor says that he is gay, but the sub-contractor does that for him. The sub-contractor then says "I like to kiss" before making a kissing face.
- Contractor - He is a contractor that works for J&J Construction in Springfield. When Homer tells him to kiss Marge, he says he is gay and that he has a subcontractor to do those kinds of things for him. He is also hired to reconstruct the First Church of Springfield after Chief Wiggum crashes into it.
- Homer Simpson Lookalike - While using the Grinder app to find a boyfriend for Waylon Smithers, Homer finds a user who looks identical to him and decides to invite him to Moe's Tavern. When his doppelgänger arrives, Homer gives him five dollars to visit Abe Simpson pretending to be Homer. He replies enthusiastically with "Finally, I'm paid to act!".
- Yupprechaun - When the Simpsons were driving through Dunkilderry, Abe saw this Leprechaun and another Leprechaun whom he called "yupprechauns" walking down the sidewalk. They are later seen having cocktails at an open-air pub while holding each other's hands and flirting with one another.
- Bruce Vilanch - He is an openly gay comedian.
- David Hyde Pierce - He is a gay actor.
- Raja - They are a gay, non-binary drag queen.
- The Rich Texan's grandson - He is the unnamed gay grandson of Richard Texan and the son of Paris Texan. The Rich Texan said that he needed to call him and tell him he still loved him.
- Dolph Starbeam's stepfather - He is the stepfather of Dolph Starbeam and is married to his father, Mr. Starbeam.
- Village People - They are an American disco group known for its on-stage costumes and suggestive lyrics in their music. The group was originally formed by French producers Jacques Morali, Henri Belolo and lead singer Victor Willis following the release of the debut album Village People, which targeted disco's large gay audience. The group's name refers to Manhattan's Greenwich Village, with its reputation as a gay neighborhood. The characters were a symbolic group of American masculinity and macho gay-fantasy personas.
- Mayor Quimby's Bodyguards - They are two gay bodyguards of Joe Quimby.
- Kissing Cops - When the Simpson family were on the run during Trappuccino, they stayed at the Red Rash Inn. The two cops drove up to Marge and she thought she was going to be arrested. Instead, they walked past her, went into a room and started kissing each other.
- King Julio - When he asked Queen Elizabeth I for her hand in marriage, she passed him as he was making goo-goo eyes with her court jester. King Julio said that this was because he liked men who can make him laugh. He then tried to take the jester with him, but Queen Elizabeth I refused to let the jester go.
- Ian McKellen - He is an English actor who came out as gay in 1988 and has since championed LGBT social movements worldwide.
- Moe-looking Satan - In order for Satan to not act on his deal with Marge and take her favorite child, Maggie Simpson, he suggested to Homer that him, Homer and another male Demon have a three-way, too which Homer agrees.
- Unnamed Demon - He has a three-way with Satan and Homer so that Satan doesn't take Maggie.
- Huckleberry Hound - Huckleberry was confirmed in a preview to appear on the following week's episode of Behind the Laughter. In the preview, he stated that he was very gay and could not tell anyone.
- Dr. Smith - Implied that he wanted to molest Bart Simpson. It is important to note, however, that tendencies toward pedophilia (even same-sex pedophilia) don't automatically equate to homosexuality.
- Tom Collins - He is a gay man who attended a party at the Simpson house to find a boyfriend for Waylon Smithers. He then flirts with George Takei.
- George Takei - Homer found him on the app Grinder and invited him to a party to get Waylon Smithers a boyfriend. Takei spoke with Tom Collins at the party. He asked Collins if he would be charmed by horror stories of Bill Shatner, and when Collins didn't know who he was, Takei said that he liked him already.
- Streetcar men - They are seen on a streetcar in Springfield's Gay Neighborhood.
- Bruce - Bruce is seen in the crossover with Family Guy "The Simpsons Guy".
- John Herbert - He has displayed a strong attraction to Chris Griffin and other pre-pubescent and pubescent male children, being a pedohebephile. It is important to note, however, that tendencies toward pedophilia (even same-sex pedophilia) don't automatically equate to homosexuality.
- Unnamed Latino Man - When he saw Homer's graffiti tag of "El Homo", he said, "If only I had your courage, señor."[11]
- Raoul - Women disgust him and he becomes interested in Abraham Simpson.[12]
- Geoffrey - Dewey Largo's current boyfriend.
Hinted to be gay
- Karl - Kissed Homer on the lips after stating that his mom taught him to never kiss a fool and he was voiced by Harvey Fierstein, one of the first openly gay celebrities. However, it should be noted that Karl is implied to be of German origin, and men kissing men doesn't necessarily equate to homosexuality as much as just respect in some European countries, but generally not on the lips, rather on the cheek. Karl also patted Homer on the behind after giving him a pep talk, but in the context of the situation, it could easily be considered a comradely gesture rather than an affectionate one.[13] He was also seen in the background in the episode Flaming Moe, and dancing with Jacques in the “Do the Bartman” music video.

- Cecil Terwilliger - In the quest "Say 'Cheers'" Cecil is shown to be attracted to Moe Szyslak calling him beautiful and making several other homosexual statements. Coincidentally, David Hyde Pierce, Cecil's voice actor, came out as gay in 2007.
- Kevin - In "The Devil Wears Nada", Rod and Todd mention an Uncle Kevin who lives with his "funny friend", David. It is unknown if Kevin and David are lovers or simply roommates.
- David - In "The Devil Wears Nada", Rod and Todd bring up David, who lives with their uncle Kevin. It's never revealed if David is Kevin's lover or his roommate.
- Father Ben, Father Mike, Father Sean, Priest, Former Priest - Weren’t at the Sex, Pies, and Idiot Scrapes “Straight Catholic Priests” parade ride.
- Dash Calhoun - He is a leading actor in Springfield. He attended the opening of Springfield's monorail. Kent Brockman claimed he was "recently outed". He greeted the audience with exaggerated kissing gestures.
- Discus Stu - He appears in the "Homer's Odyssey," where he implies his attraction to Telemachus. He appears as one of many suitors in line to marry Penelope (portrayed by Marge) after her husband Odysseus (Portrayed by Homer) has left for the Trojan War for several years. Stu cuts the line and walks up to Penelope and her son Telemachus (Portrayed by Bart) and proclaims, "Discus St has ouzo for two-zo"(ouzo being an alcoholic beverage). Pleased, Telemachus leaves to let Stu and Penelope be alone. While Telemachus is leaving, Stu says "Discus Stu was talking to you!", sending a shudder down Telemachus' spine.
- Ernst - He and his partner Gunter are performers who use white tigers, such as Anastasia, in their act.

- Franklin - He is a student at Rommelwood Military School.
- Tab Spangler - Counselor at the Serenity Ranch fat camp. When he drives Homer from Springfield to Serenity Ranch for some treatment, he suggests that they stop off at a motel and split a room, even though it's only an hour's drive. When Homer asks where he's going to sleep, Spangler replies, "We can worry about that when we're standing naked before the bed!" Also, in one of his treatment exercises, Spangler's fat camp clients pull a chariot while he rides in it. The chariot is called the "Chubby Chaser", which in the gay community is a term for a man who is attracted to overweight men.
- Paul Lynde - Appeared in an Easter-themed TV special with Nadia Comăneci. Lynde, dressed in a rabbit costume and speaking in a blatantly suggestive manner, said to Comăneci that he would like to "hippity-hop on [her] balance beam". Comăneci shuddered in disgust, then recovered her composure and drily replied, "I don't think you understand the mechanics of heterosexual sex."
- Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss - After coming in second in a London 2012 Olympics boat rowing event (which they lost to Patty and Selma), they started making out with each other.
- Video Erötich customer - After the release of Gassensexen, an inadvertently made porn video with Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin, the man went to Video Erötich, an erotic video store, to purchase it.
- Just Stamp the Ticket Man - In "The Fat Blue Line", he kisses Homer Simpson's butt on the Kiss Cam.

- Lady Gaga - She is openly bisexual in real life (which is hinted in the hit single "Poker Face") and even kisses Marge Simpson in "Lisa Goes Gaga", much to Marge's surprise. However, Marge is straight as far as we know.
- Verity Heathbar - Leaves her husband Charles for Patty, who says that they were brought together by their hatred of Homer.[14] Patty has never had a confirmed marriage yet, however.
- Seven Dwarfs - Sing that they're bi at the end of the story.
- Candace - She dated Homer in "Every Man's Dream", but she also tells him "Even I've dated more girls than you!".
- P.A.M.E.L. A - She is a female robot that Patty bought to be her partner. She runs off with Selma's Lovebot, a male robot.
- Mr. Starbeam - He has an ex-wife and is currently married to a man.
- Gore Vidal - Vidal was bisexual, and in his novels and essays interrogated the social and cultural sexual norms he perceived as driving American life. Lisa regarded Gore (or, at least, his books) as one of her only friends. She described him as a grown-up nerd, who still had kissed more boys than she ever will. He has also had numerous relationships with women.
- Nigel - Famous billionaire and Mr. Burns' boarding school friend. Is currently and unhappily married to a young woman but tries very hard to win Smithers in a bet. After he loses, Smithers saves his finances by gaslighting Burns and Nigel then kisses Smithers in gratitude. Al Jean has confirmed on his Twitter that he would consider Nigel as bisexual.
- David Bowie - He was a bisexual musician and actor.
- Susan Sontag - She was a bisexual essayist mentioned by Lisa while she was listing people, she admires that are gay.
- Janelle Monáe - She has said she identifies with both bisexuality and pansexuality.
- Queen Bean - Bean was confirmed as bisexual in a tweet from Netflix.[15]
Hinted to be bisexual
- Rainier Wolfcastle - Possibly bisexual since he has his early gay porn films located within his bedroom in The Strong Arms of the Ma, although these may have been made for money (i.e., gay for pay) and not as a reflection of his real sexuality.
- Leprechaun - Abe saw him and Yupprechaun walking down the sidewalk. They are later seen having cocktails at an open-air pub while holding each other's hands and flirting with one another. He later marries a gypsy woman in “Hex and the City”.
- Duffman - Slept with Titania, who was competing in a bartending contest that he was judging.[16] However, Bart mentions that Duffman is supposedly in a long-term gay relationship after seeing him dining with Booberella.[17] He is later in a relationship with Grady.[18] It should be noted, however, that there are several different actors portraying Duffman,[19] and not all of them necessarily have the same sexual orientation. Also, some of the actors are now dead.
- The Sea Captain - Apu delivers pornographic magazines to keep the Sea Captain's crew from resorting to situational homosexuality for about ten minutes, at least.[20] However, the Captain is also seen taking pictures of Selma and Patty in the nude to cope with being out at sea.[21]
- Santa's Little Helper - Intrigued by male dogs at the Springfield Gay Pride Parade.[22] However, he mated with both She's the Fastest[23] and Rosa Barks,[24] both of whom were definitely female as both unions produced puppies.
- Ralph Wiggum - In The Simpsons Movie, he declares, "I like men now!" after seeing Bart naked on a skateboard.[25] However, Lisa Simpson was his first crush.[26] It should be noted, though, that nothing Ralph says about himself is reliable since his understanding of everything is questionable.
- Martin Prince - Generally effeminate. He is accused of being gay by Nelson and protests, "I'm not anything yet!";[1] but has a robot boyfriend in the future.[27] On the other hand, he did have an attraction to Princess Kashmir on seeing Bart's photo of her dancing with Homer, even referring to it as being "quite exciting" and calling her a "sexy lady" when he asked Bart who she was.[28] When he imagines himself as a basketball player in "Replaceable You", he is holding hands with both a male and female cheerleader.
- Lisa Simpson - First of all, Al Jean made many tweets about Lisa being bisexual, which almost confirms it, however it can’t be confirmed until it is confirmed in the show. In the episode "No Loan Again, Naturally", Bart said “Lisa is Gay!”, then Lisa firmly replied, “Like I wouldn’t want to be gay like all my heroes.” Implying that she might be gay, or bisexual. In the episode Mother and Child Reunion, a fortune teller said that Lisa has a 42% chance to have a boyfriend in the future and a 72% chance for a girlfriend in the future. However, what really hints that Lisa is bi is her response, “I like those odds!”. In the episode "Holidays of Future Passed", a montage of photos was featured to show a glimpse of what’s to come for the Simpsons family. Lisa is shown intimately holding hands with two women in one photo, then with a different woman in another photo. She is later shown married to Milhouse Van Houten and having a child with him, and possibly marrying Ralph Wiggum. She has also dated several other boys. In the episode "Gorgeous Grampa", Homer is flipping through the reality shows, to Lisa's disgust. However, when Homer and Lisa keep flipping through channels and see a reality show on gay marriage she says 'Well' and thinks about it. Al Jean also teased that a future-set episode in Season 29 would feature Lisa ending up with a woman, stating, “Oh my God, I have a friend!” Then her friend holds her hand romantically and winks at her, where she remarks, “Maybe more than a friend!” Which ended up happening. [29] However, Mr. Lisa's Opus is ambiguous about it. The episode "Bart to the Future" contradicts this when a then 38-year-old Lisa campaigns and wins to become "the first straight female President" of the United States. In other episode, Stan and Roger enter a competition to see who is the better actor while they are in a play, and during a love scene, Stan kisses Roger and they end up having sex on stage and get arrested for public indecency. While undercover trying to catch a man who sells fake IDs to teens, Stan dresses as a woman and the criminal asks him if he wants a drink. - Leslie Robin Swisher - He wears clothing associated with women and goes under the identity "Veronica" in order to play golf, and to later try to marry Patty.
- Stewie Griffin - He has multiple disguises where he dresses as a woman and seemingly enjoys wearing clothing associated with women.
- Roger Smith - Roger has hundreds of disguises to cover-up the fact that he is an Alien, the disguises including both men and women. He seems to enjoy wearing clothing associated with women the most.
