• The title of this episode is a reference to the 1998 romantic comedy-drama movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
• The Capital City Goofball statue is similar to the Statue of Liberty.
• When Jughead said he wishes Archie was still alive, following him, Moose, Reggie, Betty and Veronica entering the car with a photo of Archie on the side door; it is a reference to Life with Archie Issue #36, in which Archie was shot when he protected his friend from an assassin who wanted to kill the newly-elected senator and a campaigner for gay rights and gun control.
  • Incidentally, Andrew Rannells (who guest-starred in this episode) voiced Archie himself on Archie's Weird Mysteries.
• At the ending of the episode and during the credits, Lisa, Martin, Database and Milhouse play a version of the song Apple Core by Gerry Mulligan.
• The British American football jingle is a reference Petula Clark's "Downtown".

• When Lisa comments "Is there nothing so beautiful that they won’t keep exploiting until its worthless?", an advertising for the Season 17 DVD release flashes on the screen.
• At the beginning Bart gets a Money Grabber from China and later as Homer watches the Football game Winnie the Pooh appears in a cameo with Paddington. A year later after the episodes debut The character Winnie the Pooh was censored in China due to bloggers making Xi Jinping look like the character is humorous mishaps.
• Gil yells D'oh shortly before he drops the fake Maggie.
• This is the second time Winnie the Pooh and Paddington made a cameo after "The Fat and the Furriest".

Goofs

• This episode is one of the many that explain how Lisa got her pearl necklace, showing that Marge gave it to Lisa during her first day at school. However this is contradicted by many other episodes. For example, During "Barthood", there is a scene that takes place after Lisa's first month at school, and she is not wearing her pearls yet. During "Boy Meets Curl", Lisa mentions that her pearls were a gift by Marge when she could first read at the twelfth grade level (which could have been at a very young age), and during "Lisa's First Word", baby Lisa is already wearing her necklace.
• During the Flashback, there is a picture of Lisa, Bart and Maggie on the wall, but it is likely that Maggie wasn't even born when the flashback takes place.
• Principal Skinner says “Ah, good old Peanut Brittle”, even though he is allergic to peanuts.
• When Marge says she doesn't like jazz, Lisa's eyes split for a second.
