Cultural references[]

  • The episode title is a reference to the 1971 Disney movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
  • Mapple is a parody of Apple, and Mapple's "My"-tech product line is a parody of Apple's "i" products.
    • The MyPod is a parody of Apple's iPod.
    • MyPhone is a parody of Apple's iPhone.
  • The "Brainiac Bar" at the Mapple Store is a parody of the "Genius Bar" at Apple Stores, where technicians labeled as "Apple Geniuses" assist customers with issues involving their Apple products and can repair them.
  • When the doors of the Mapple Store and Mapple's headquarters open, they sound like the doors of the Enterprise in Star Trek.
  • Mapple owner Steve Mobbs is a parody of former Apple chairman Steve Jobs.
    • Shortly after Bart played his joke on the Mapple customers by hacking into Mobbs' live feed, one of the employees yells "Who dares question the boss we fired 10 years ago and then brought back?" referring to Steve Jobs' initial firing from Macintosh in 1985 due to infighting with the then-CEO John Sculley over the direction of the company and his later being rehired by Macintosh in 1997 due to various failed business ventures during the 1990s.
  • When Comic Book Guy throws the sledgehammer into Steve Mobbs' image on the wall video screen (after Bart hacked into the newsfeed to play a joke on the Mapple Store shoppers), it is a reference to the "1984" Super Bowl commercial that introduced the Macintosh personal computer.
  • Homer mentions Osama Bin Laden.
  • Bart tries to use a MyCube to help in his escape from the store, and all that happens is that the MyCube plays music. The song it plays is Lovin' You by Minnie Riperton.
  • Homer's dream references the 1992 Disney film Aladdin with its carpet ride, Robin Williams' Genie, and music in the style of A Whole New World. Dan Castellaneta, Homer's voice actor, voiced the Genie in the first sequel (The Return of Jafar), the animated series and the Kingdom Hearts video game series (namely Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II).
  • As Homer dives into the river to save the Duff Beer, James Bond-like music is heard.
  • Mapple's undersea headquarters are accessed via a submersible that resembles a USB flash drive.

Trivia[]

  • In "Lisa the Drama Queen", it is shown that Lisa still owns her MyPod.
  • While Steve Mobbs talks, a narwhal can be seen swimming behind him.
  • This is the second episode where Bart accepts something from a stranger, the first being "New Kids on the Blecch".
  • This is the second episode where a character explained his excuse to get out of jury duty, the first being "Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie".
  • This is the second episode to have a diePod, the first being Million Dollar Abie.
  • Lisa owed Mapple $1200 for downloading 1,212 songs, which cost $0.99 plus tax (or $1.00) for each song. 99 cents per song = $1,199.88. 101 songs would cost $100.
  • This is the second time Bart uses a microphone. The first one was Radio Bart.

Goofs[]

Hans moleman goof
  • When Homer runs into the old Springfield Mall if you look closely Hans Moleman can be seen to his left. But when the Duff truck crashes and Homer swims to save the beer, he's trapped in the truck.
  • When Krusty gives Lisa the MyPod, and when Lisa shows her music to Sherri and Terri, her MyPod is like the iPod Classic. But when the three of them watch the exclusive episode of Itchy & Scratchy, her MyPod is like the iPod Touch. The giveaway is that there are no buttons in the center, and the homescreen has apps.
  • A Mapple Store "Brainiac"'s voice changes between scenes. The male blond-haired technician is voiced by Dan Castellaneta when asking Comic Book Guy if he got peanut butter in his laptop's Ethernet port again. But when commenting to Lisa that they're all "Mapple people," Hank Azaria does his voice.
  • Lisa couldn't have purchased all those songs without a gift card or a credit card present. While it was Krusty's myPod, she clearly had it set up using her own username, which is not possible.
  • When Homer is flying on the magic carpet, he is covered in his blanket, but when the camera zooms out, his blanket is gone.
  • When the Duff trucks crash and Homer swims to save the Duff, one of the trucks is a double trailer, but both of the trucks that went off the edge of the bridge only had one trailer.
  • When Bashir leaves the dining room if you look closely you can see that his eyebrows disappear.
