Cultural references

  • The name is a parody of the 1988 film Coming to America.
  • The song played during the credits is called "Hopparen" ("The Jumper"). It was performed by Chateau Neuf Spelemannslag.
  • A house with balloons tied to it resembling the one from the Pixar film Up can be seen in the background when Lenny and Carl are monitoring Springfield from the air.
  • The chair with balloons is itself a parody of Father Adelir, who tried to fly with balloons of helium.
  • The Ogdenville citizens are descendants of Norwegian immigrants, and the episode was aired on May 17 - the day Norway celebrates its Constitution.
  • When Homer first tries Aquavit, he gets drunk immediately and his head hits the table and he says "More Aquavit Please", a parody of the "More Ovaltine Please" Line.
  • The name of the song during the construction of the wall is "Sing Sing Sing" by Benny Goodman.
  • During the closing of Ogdenville, the packed trucks and the grandmother placed on top of one is a literature reference to The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
  • When the Ogdenville citizens are packing up to leave town, it is referencing "I Am Legend", even the music.
  • The music played after the farm failures in Ogdenville is "The Death of ƅse" From Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg, a famous Norwegian composer.
  • The billboard ("Spider Pig: The Musical: Music by U2 and Alf Clausen") is a reference to the Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark", which has music by Bono and the Edge.

Goofs

  • It seems a little strange as to why all the Ogdenvillians would go to Springfield and not other neighboring cities, like North Haverbrook or Brockway (as mentioned in Marge vs. the Monorail), or better yet, move out of whatever state Springfield is in.
  • When Chief Wiggum is at the checkpoint, he mentions to Lou that Springfield only has three police officers. After the completion of the wall, five Springfield Police officers are shown in uniform, with an additional two in a SWAT element.

  • This episode reveals that Homer is afraid of xylophones, although he played one in On a Clear Day I Can't See My Sister.
    • He may have developed that fear in the meantime.
  • Also, Xylophobia is the fear of wooden objects, not of xylophones.
  • In the scene where Lou talks to Chief Wiggum, his mouth disappears for a frame.
  • In one scene, where Homer gets food poisoned, as he runs to one of the bathrooms, he runs across the hallway which somehow appears in the house from nowhere.

Trivia

  • This episode first aired on Norwegian Constitution Day, which would explain the heavy Norwegian references in the episode (coincidentally, Matt Groening is part-Norwegian).
  • This is the last episode where the Simpsons have a standard fullscreen television set. Starting with the 21st broadcast season and onward, the Simpsons would have a high-definition widescreen television set, while the standard definition CRT TV was there for broadcast Seasons 1-20.
