Cultural References[]
- Smithers and Dr. Hibbert discussing Mr. Burns' health is a reference to Citizen Kane.
- In the Springfield Post Office, a fresco seen above is a parody of The Creation of Adam.
- The head can also be seen in later episodes, in the corner of the Simpsons basement with the rest of the clutter.
- The song that Otto hums while washing his hands is "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath.
- Homer has confused the stories Androcles and the Lion and Hercules and the Nemean lion.
- This episode was referenced in the video game The Simpsons: Bart vs. the World in the trivia round. Question: "How did Bart save Mr. Burns' life?" A: He pushed him out of the way of a falling plutonium rod. B: He donated blood to him (correct answer) C: He talked Homer out of murdering him.
- Homer trying to pour liquid into a mailbox only to be stopped by a mail carrier was later reused in "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson". However, the difference was that in the latter episode Homer was struggling to find a place to urinate.
- Although it is the second season finale, this episode wasn’t originally meant to be a season finale, as the next episode, "Stark Raving Dad" was supposed to be instead.
Goofs/Trivia[]
- If Smithers' blood type is B-Positive, his kidneys would work on a person with an AB Positive blood type, since they can accept any blood type or another B-Positive person, like Homer. However, a B-Positive person donor is incompatible with a Double O-negative person, meaning that Bart wouldn't be able to use his blood to save Mr. Burns.
- When Mr. Burns reads Homer's letter, the text on the letter disappears for a frame.
- Instead of pretending to be Mr. Burns, why didn’t Homer just tell the man at the post office his real name and that he has to get the letter back he mailed by mistake since his name is on the return address? This can likely be explained by Homer's lack of intelligence.
- Given its size, the Olmec head statue should not of been able to enter the Simpsons' house without the outer walls of the house removed.
- This episode reveals Bart’s first three allergies: butterscotch, imitation butterscotch, and Glow in the Dark Monster Make-up.
- Homer's wristwatch disappears and reappears while he is sneaking into Burns' office.
