Cultural References[]
- The Russian wrestler, Rasputin, is probably named after Grigori Rasputin.
- The Springfield Elementary band plays Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.
- Werner von Brawn, one of the wrestlers in the match, is probably named after Wernher von Braun.
- Bart appearing at Springfield Gorge in the distance is based on Omar Sharif's entrance in Lawrence of Arabia.
- The monster truck at the rally, Truck-o-saurus, is a parody to the famous monster truck, Robosaurus.
- Captain Lance Murdock is a parody of famous daredevils such as Evel Knievel.
- The movie "Jaws" is parodied in the way the lion leaps out to attack Lance Murdock.
- This episode contains the music video for "Do the Bartman" single which was omitted in some British broadcasts of this episode and was cut from American reruns.
- Captain Murdock is a reference to The A-Team's Captain H. M. Murdock.
- Homer's attempt of jumping over Springfield Gorge is based on Evel Knievel's attempted Skycycle X-2 jump over the Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls, Idaho on the 8th September 1974.
Trivia/Goofs[]
- This is the fifth episode to have Bart's name somewhere in the title.
- The referee in the wrestling match counts the pin fall four instead of three.
- Homer's second plunge down the gorge (after the ambulance hit a tree) had additional footage of Homer falling down and getting hit in the head with the gurney he was on. This was considered too violent to show when the episode first aired, so it was replaced with a frozen shot of the kids looking down as Homer falls again. The missing footage would later crop up on the season four episode, "So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show".
- Homer's failure to complete the jump was mostly due to him losing his momentum when he celebrates halfway through the jump.
- The shots of Homer going over the gorge and falling down it is also used in "Behind the Laughter" (with different animation of Homer falling), "The Blunder Years" when Homer has a flashback and Lisa interrupts him by saying "Dad, everyone is tired of that memory." and "Monty Burns' Fleeing Circus" in the couch gag.
- Later, on The Simpsons Movie, viewers discover that the ambulance that hit the tree at Springfield Gorge is still there years later.
- Additionally, the running animation where Homer runs up after arriving to the gorge to save Bart and prevent him from jumping over it appears to be identical to his running animation when he tried to pounce on his kids when they took & used his ties in the Tracey Ullman short, called "Bart of the Jungle". The only main differences really is that the animation is visibly more fluid & Homer's face is really worried rather than angry. Here's a comparison:
- The footage of the Truckasaurus on the TV commercial shows a pink car being crushed, it is possible that this footage is the same as the incident in which the family car is crushed at the event.
- This is the first of a few rare times Homer and Bart cry together.
- The scene footage where the bus is driven back to school after visiting the Springfield Gorge is taken from Season 1's Homer's Odyssey. You can tell the footage is reused because of it showing gradient-style backgrounds that were used very early on in Season 1.
- This is the first appearance of Dr. Hibbert.
- Captions misspelled Lance Murdock as "Lance Murdoch".
- This was the second episode to be aired by the BBC, airing on November 30, 1996.
- Nazis on Tap was originally supposed to appear on a rerun of this episode.
- The credits of this episode used the arrangement of the theme from the first season's opening as opposed to the usual credits arrangement.
- The Best of The Simpsons: Volume 6 has the first season's opening with no Sound Effects.
- The 1998 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment UK VHS release of Casper Meets Wendy has the Egyptian Dance couch gag.
- This is Matt Groening's favorite episode.
- The non-canon Season 34 episode "Lisa the Boy Scout" includes a scene "confirming" a theory that after Homer went into a coma from failing to jump the gorge, the rest of the series was simply part of his dreams, all of which only spanned two days.
Goofs[]
- The back of the back-most engine on Ms. Monster repeatedly becomes transparent.
- When Nelson asks, "Where is he? I thought he said noon," you can see Milhouse's lips moving at the same time.
- Before Bart jumps over Marge's car for the second time (which unlike the first time didn't fail) Richard's hair briefly turns blue instead of grey.
