Trivia[]

  • While Bart is departing from Hell, the Devil told him to remember to "lie, cheat, steal and listen to heavy metal music." Ironically, it was eight months after the episode aired that often Hell-referencing Australian heavy metal AC/DC would headline the historic Monsters in Moscow concert which symbolized the weakening status of the USSR's chances of survival.
  • This marks the first appearances for Dr. Nick Riviera, Blue-haired Lawyer and Lionel Hutz.
  • This is the second episode to show its title (the first being "The Telltale Head") and first to show its number (episode 23).
  • The Devil was off in his calculation of the next time the Yankees would win the American League pennant: not "nearly a century from now," but in 1996, 5 years after this episide aired. In fact, the Yankees would enjoy a period of unrivalled success in the late '90s and early 2000's, winning six pennants and four World Series, a far cry from the century of futility the Devil predicted.
  • When Bart goes to hell there's a parody of Hieronymus Bosch's hell from The Garden of Earthly Delights and Michelangelo's David makes a cameo.
  • The Devil uses a Macintosh computer to check Bart's record.
  • The Devil sounds exactly like Ned Flanders since he is voiced by Harry Shearer.
  • Sign in Dr. Nick Riviera's office: "Yes, we use anesthetic!" Also, one of his diplomas reads: "I went to medical school for four years and all I got was this lousy diploma."
  • This episode shows Great Grandma Simpson, Aunt Hortense, and Snowball I in Heaven.
  • Dr. Hibbert pokes Bart's bump and he shouts "Ow! Quit it." two times. This was the second time we hear Bart shout "Ow! Quit it." He first mentioned it in "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire." Matt Groening claims this reference comes from what his real life siblings (Maggie and Lisa) used to do to him when he was a child.
  • Mr Burns offers Homer $500,000 which is what Homer would have received if he had won the court case. This is because Mr Hutz says that he gets 50% of the $1 million settlement.
  • This is one of the most heavily edited episodes in syndication. The full opening sequence is replaced with the short opening from the Season 5 episode "Rosebud", and there are seventeen cut scenes, none of which are over nine seconds long.
  • Approximately halfway through the episode, when Bart is on the witness stand, the characters Akbar and Jeff from Matt Groening's comic, Life in Hell, can be seen in the courtroom audience.
  • Bart's X-ray shows him with a normal round shaped skull but later episodes will show the top as spiky like his hair.
  • This is the sixth episode to have Bart's name somewhere in the title.
  • This is the first episode to air in 1991 and the first episode to be made in that year according to the credits.
  • Despite the episode seemingly focusing on Bart, it actually focuses on Homer and Marge's marriage.

Cultural References[]

  • The song Tijuana Taxi by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass is heard twice in the show's history: in this episode (as Mr. Burns is recalling the time leading up to the incident), and in "On a Clear Day I Can't See My Sister".
  • The Devil says "Please allow me to introduce myself", a reference to The Rolling Stones song Sympathy for the Devil.
  • When Bart wakes up from his out-of-body experience, he says, "I did go away, Mom! I was miles and miles and miles away, writhing in agony in the pits of Hell! And you were there! And you and you and you," a reference to The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy awakens from her slumber.
  • This episode was referenced in the video game The Simpsons: Bart vs. the World in the trivia round. Question: In the episode where Bart had the out-of-body experience after being hit by the car, what caused Bart to get kicked out of Heaven? A: He spat over the side. (correct answer) B: He tied an angel's wings together. C: He spraypainted the clouds.
  • When Mr Burns says "give him a nickel and lets go" after Bart is hit by the car, he is referencing a moment from Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities where Marquis St. Evrémonde accidentally kills a child when he demanded that his carriage should be driven faster and responds by remorselessly throwing a coin towards the aggrieved father as compensation.
  • This episode when Bart's soul is going to the sky is just like Tom and Jerry in "Heavenly Puss" when Tom's soul is going to the sky.

Goofs[]

2lawyer

Two blue-haired lawyers

  • In the scene where Burn's blue-haired lawyer is questioning Marge about Dr. Riviera, when it goes to the view behind/next to Marge's head you can see the blue-haired lawyer both in front of Marge, and also in the background sitting next to Mr. Burns and the other lawyer.
  • The reflection of Smithers in Mr. Burns' car when Mr.Burns is telling his version of what happened, doesn't make sense, he wouldn't have a reflection from where he is standing.
  • When the Judge is introduced, he is referred to as Judge Moulton. In all subsequent experienced, he's called Judge Snyder (this was because the writers of later episodes didn't realize the character had been given a name earlier on).
