Another Simpsons Clip Show |
|
Trivia[]
- Because the episode was a clip show that most crew members found boring, the season six DVD commentary consisted of the staff outlining the step-by-step process of how a typical Simpsons episode is made, including a tongue-in-cheek claim from David Mirkin that the episode is not considered good unless fans declare it the worst episode ever (even if it's one of the episodes considered "classic" or "iconic" by mainstream critics and casual viewers).
- Not counting "Treehouse Of Horror XXIV" in Season 25 or the 2007 movie, this episode is the only canon episode in the show's history to have two of the show's primary animation studios (AKOM and Rough Draft Studios in this case) credited for the same episode due to clips and use of recycled footage. This is also the only clip show episode to credit more than one studio, with the others (including season four's "So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show") only credit the studio responsible for the wraparound segments.
Previous Episode References[]
- The Itchy and Scratchy mini-episode from Homer the Heretic returns. This is the only returning Itchy and Scratchy mini-episode in the history of the show.
- Selected past love stories:
- Selected 'Moe's Tavern Crank-Calls':
- Selected Homer's "Mmm..." lines:
- Selected kisses of Homer and Marge:
- After Homer's speech at the Sapphire Lounge
- After making up at Moe's Tavern
- After Marge sings "You Are So Beautiful To Me"
- After Homer says Marge is as pretty as Princess Leia and as smart as Yoda
- After singing "You Light Up My Life"
- After Marge's performance of "Oh! Streetcar!"
- After Marge admits her gambling problem
- The scene from "The Last Temptation of Homer" where Patty and Selma shave their legs is cut from the "Think Unsexy Thoughts" flashback scene.
- "So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show": A Simpsons clip show episode that starts off as a normal episode.
- "The Front": A joke is made about Ren and Stimpy's troubled production (the award show clip for Ren and Stimpy is a slide that reads "CLIP NOT AVAILABLE"/Lisa pointing out that Ren and Stimpy recycles footage to make new episodes and Marge asks them when was the last time anyone talked about that show).
- "Dog of Death": Homer throws a book in the fireplace after realizing it's not useful to him.
- "Duffless": A fat character (Chief Wiggum/Homer) eats hot dogs in a kiddie pool.
Cultural References[]
- At the beginning of the episode, Marge is reading the 1992 book The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller.
- Marge asks why the kids watch the same Itchy and Scratchy episodes all the time, with Bart saying that it's a new episode and Lisa correcting him that it's actually a new episode pieced together from recycled footage (and pointing out that Ren and Stimpy do it all the time, with Marge asking them when was the last time anyone talked about that show). Not only is this a jab at the troubled production stories behind John Kricfalusi's famed animated show on Nickelodeon, but also a jab at this episode of The Simpsons reusing footage, not just in the clips of past episodes, but also in the actual framing device of the family sitting around the kitchen table and the scenes leading up to it (Marge trying to talk to Homer about their waning romance, Homer saying he's been working all day at the nuclear plant and Marge saying he actually spent his Saturday drinking in Maggie's kiddie pool, the fireplace that "suddenly" appeared in the bedroom, and the kids watching The Itchy and Scratchy Show).
Goofs[]
- Bart's story about Laura didn't end in heartbreak: she dumped Jimbo after he broke down crying over Moe threatening to stab him, and Laura said that if Bart were old enough, she would go out with him. Considering that Laura didn't appear after that episode, she probably left him for different reasons. Or maybe Bart does still consider it heartbreak because Laura sees him as just a friend or like a little brother.
- After the Itchy and Scratchy mini-episode, from the shot where Bart and Lisa are laughing when Marge enters the room to when Lisa says the word "youth", they all have the Season 1 animation. Then when it shows Bart's face close up, the animation is back to the current one.
